Tench Campaign Part 4.

Well as the river season draws ever closer and the thought of stalking monster river Rudd and feeling the tug of the bronze torpedos as I get my 40 Rivers Challenge back underway it would seem my time after Tench has come to a close (still 4 weeks to run on my ticket), it has been a super start on a venue I'd never seen before and knew little of, I came away after 6 visits with 23 Tench with 19 over 7lbs and 3x new personal bests weighing at 8lb 5oz, 8lb 14oz and 8lb 15ozs.

Part of me wants to get back on there before July 15th as there are certainly doubles in there fully spawned out, my only reason for not going back is the time spent there is possibly taking an opportunity away from catching a big Barbel from a river within my challenge, its a quandary I must overcome, those big tench that I was catching across late April and May are truly special creatures.

Tench number 22 & 23 came on a short overnight session last week when I decided to have one last go for a real fatty before they got down to business, little did I know they had already been at it and considering the condition of the two Tench I had they were going hard at it, with that knowledge I packed up and went home, two 6lb plus fish to round off my short Spring campaign wasn't a bad return.

There may yet be a part 5.....watch this space.

Anyway, it's June 16th tomorrow, Rudd fishing wherever the wind takes me and hopefully get some great content for a film for the Drennan Specialist platform. Good Luck to you all.

Tench Campaign Part 3.

Well, before I get to the trip I have just finished with I'll catch you up on a visit I paid last week Friday.

 I blanked...

Well, that's been taken care of let's get on with the trip I finished up on earlier today. I had loaded the van on Thursday morning with all the fishing gear I required for a 36hr stay and the bare minimum of work gear! I finished work around 3pm and set off for the motorway and thankfully my trip from Fulham to Mid-Kent was very smooth and I was back on hallowed grounds and fishing by 5pm.

Every time I pull up to gates the thoughts of monster fish laying up in the net are rife! There are fish here to make the most accomplished specimen angler shake with nerves and excitement in equal measure. I just want one fish of that standard, until such time that happens I will do my best to empty the place!!

I got my first run within an hour or so of getting the rods out and it was a good one too of 8lb 3oz, just 3 weeks ago that was a joint PB! now it's a lovely fish. That was quickly followed up by a big male of 8lb 0oz and then a fish of around 6lb. The fish in here are special. Then the rods fell silent until 1am when I lost a Tench to a hook pull not far from the net.

8lb 3oz, great start.

With my alarm set for 0340, I was awake and raring to go by 0330 ( who needs an alarm when the dawn chorus was deafening, a wonderful thing to experience, which also featured my first Cuckoo of the year ). Strangely the arrival of dawn didn't bring a single bite, I had to wait until 0630, then it all went berserk. I will add the details at this point of what and how I was fishing.

Overnight I had issues with little Perch (wasps) pulling the worms off my hairs and got to a point I had to change it up because I wasn't fishing with bait on the hook after 20mins or so, so I made the decision to switch back to snails as I had fished in my previous two trips. Also I had two rods fishing on a plateau which was about 8ft deep and one rod fished to my left about two-rod lengths off the bank in 12ft of water and this spot for me was devastating, for nearly two hours I couldn't keep the bait in the water.

I had a run of very good fish starting with a 7lb 7oz tench, this was followed by...7lb 10oz, 7lb 8oz, another 7lb 10oz, 7lb 4oz and a 5lb+ fish, my newly set PB was broken and then broken again, by these two absolute stunners!

New PB 8lb 14ozs.

New New PB 8lb 15ozs.

The stamp of fishing I was having in that period of 7am to 11am was pretty awesome, my open water rods also contributed but the margin spot was having it off!

The 8.15 in all her glory without my face init.

I was hoping I may have a session like this on here before they spawned and by the looks of most of these fish that aren't ready to go yet, the water temp at 20.3c would suggest otherwise but bar one female most were in this shape, not swollen heffers!

The sport didn't end right there as I took another at 8lb 1oz which gave me the right run around, my biggest male tench yet.

Beauty and the Buff.

And I would love to say that it carried on after that 8.01 male, the effort to keep the bait flying out and rods constantly re-baited was keeping me busy, but that feeding spell gave way to silence, an unexpected one too given the carnage that had just occurred but that silence stretched all the way through to 0615 this morning when my rod tore off for a final time with my smallest fish of the trip around mid-5lb.

All in all I finished up with 13 Tench, lost 4, bit off by a pike 3 times ( third time I nearly netted it ) and heard the cuckoo for hours, all very nice given my previous attempt, will I get one more chance before the fish spawn? Only time will tell.

Tench Campaign Part 2.

After sessions one and two had been completed very quickly I had eyes on another trip as I wanted to keep my eye in and keep getting over to the pit, unfortunately I had to wait a week for the next gap to become available such is my busy life outside of angling!

Sunday afternoon I got all the gear loaded in the van and off I went, half an hour drive later I was hopping out the van to unlock the fishery gate, and not long after that I was back in my peg that I have now began to work out even though my second visit resulted in a blank, I simply put that down to the lack of activity and feeding fish rather than a poor area and bait not presented well.

Having renewed my rod license this time I went with for the first time in my life a "3 rod" license which allowed me to get a third rod out, just that little bit more a chance of that special fish. Around 2030 the rods were out and groundbait laced with dendrobeana and worm liquid were launched out to my three spots, two around 20m out and the other around 35m just behind a gravel bar, the two nearer rods my side of the gravel bar.

I didn't have to wait long for liners and within two hours my LH rod was away and an angry fish fought tooth and nail to get off my size 12 XT feeder hook and when "he" finally came in it was clear it was a good fish and on the scales it was confirmed I had indeed broken my PB, only by 2ozs but that doesn't matter, that was my first desire on this water, get a new PB and then my second target is a double.

Brute of a male Tench.

My new PB, 8lb 5oz.

Hopefully this PB doesn't last as long as the last one did!. As midnight came and went all I had was a little Eel trouble where my RH rod was being pestered so that kept me focused until even that didn't come back, that at least gave me the chance to get some sleep until my 0330 alarm. I was up on the alarm and all three rods were refreshed and all the spots were topped up with more betaine green mix and dendro' and once again I waited around for 2 hours or so before my next run but amazingly the amount of shows and bubblers was ridiculous, a lot of it over my left hand spot, so when the rod went I wasn't surprised it was the LH rod again, this time a female and a Tench of similar size to my first fish weighing in at 8lb 2oz.

Mega looking creatures.

Then between that fish and when I packed up I managed three more Tench which were all of a good stamp, those fish weighing 7lb 15oz, 7lb 4oz and 6lb 10oz. I was super chuffed with that return and know I am slowly getting the grip here.

Such super creatures.

Tench Campaign Part 1

For many years I have dabbled in the sport of tench fishing but never with any conviction and certainly never with a view to catching double figure specimens, you can only catch what's in front of you and only now that is a possibility.

Just before I go any further on the tench fishing I will also add that recently Dynamite Baits had got in contact with and offered me a proposition I could not refuse and now am sponsored by Dynamite Baits going forward as a result of the parent company being Rapala VMC I also have access to Okuma and Rapala tackle too, it just gets better. As a kid I'd grown up using Drennan tackle for most of my fishing and on the bait front have used their hemp, robin red pellets, source boilies and paste etc for many years, now I can keep some extra very much needed pennies in my pocket!

Anyway, now you are up to date with that I will get back to the fishing and the lakes I have chosen is a mature Kent gravel pit with some very nice fish present, double figure Tench are a real possibility, this is one specimen fish that has been missing from my list, 8lb 3oz is certainly a modest fish but one I have thought about beating for some time, now I have this ticket I will do my best to make that happen.

Only 35mins drive from my house it's perfect for even just short trips after work when I get the chance I will be heading over. A couple weeks back I had my first trip there and was just using it to get an idea what I was facing and just putting the tactics that I know to the test and hoped that something would happen and after a couple of hours I had my first run which was in the shape of a lovely 7lb 1oz male tench.

Possibly my best male Tench.

From that point on I had fizzing tench and rolling fish over me for hours, later on in the afternoon the left hand in open water went again and a nice 6lb+ Tench was nestled in the net, this was going well I thought!

Number 2 in the net, 6lb+ female.

Into the night I fished with total focus but the bobbins remained steady. I had to get some sleep and set my alarm for 3am so I could get up and refresh the rods and get more feed out there and hope for a mad rush of fish, the sunrise was majestic and a prime example of what fishing can reveal, I wouldn't be up at that time for anything else.

💙

Around an hour after sunrise my open water rod went again and once again a nice tench around the 6lb mark was landed, I am told the fish average 6-7lbs so it looked like I was amongst some good fish but not monsters. The day seemed to fly by and Tench showed everywhere around me but my rods were lifeless apart from the odd liner. Before I knew it my time was up.

Loving the new rods, bloody ace!!!

I'll be going 3 rods from tonight!

Angling selection, black :)

My second trip there was just for the day and slipped into the peg I had had success in previously but unfortunately the Tench weren't as active and for me whilst the rods were silent I topped my already tanned body.

Back out this evening, fingers crossed for more action!!

Tench and Butterflies.

Went tench fishing, weather was crud and I blanked, I blame the weather.

On to Butterflies....saw a few on my recent visits but most notable was the Small Pearl Bordered Fritillary which are pretty rare and missed out on them last year, so this year I was chuffed to see them and a mating pair to boot made it into the photo reel, species number 53 ✅. The remainder now require long distances to check off but with diesel now around £2.00 per LITRE! I am now thinking twice about any journey made in the car as its bloody expensive, regardless of financial standings, most are feeling it....

Another Season on the Bank.

Well what can I say about the 2021/22 season. It was bloody brilliant, lots of lows but amongst those lows I caught some big fish to really keep me focused and well and truly on track with my target for a double figure Barbel off of forty rivers across England, Wales and Scotland. So here is how it panned out!

 May:

I only fished once in April so there wasn't much to write about there and May wasn't too different, a single trip out in search of Golden Orfe and Tench resulted in a success on both fronts, a cold spring did make fishing difficult on the day but did finally come good.

A nice G.Orfe, but not what the lake used to produce.

7lb 7oz
 June:

Again it was a very lean time for me fishing wise as the birth of my second child meant I was helping out at home and being Dad, I did manage two trips (1x Medway and 1x Mole) but these resulted in blanks.

 2 trips / 2 blanks / 6hrs / 0 Barbel / 0 Doubles.

 July:

I found time slightly easier come by on the bank as I was back to work, this gave me the opportunity to fish a bit on my way home and did start to have some successes, two of the six rivers I had fished in the month of July produced double figure fish for me in the shape of these below. Apart from that I had the odd Chub too and three smaller Barbel to 8.13.

R.Colne 11.07

R.Medway 13.09

 11 trips / 7 blanks / 40hrs / 5 Barbel / 2 Doubles.

 August:

Again, in August I found myself getting about quite a bit with most of my trips being conducted after work, but I did also manage a superb road trip up north where I struck gold on multiple fronts. Nothing could have prepared me for the achievement I was to receive. A tough start on the Mole did come good on the sixth time of asking with a stunning double figure Barbel slipping over the rim of the net, I also rocked up on the R.Derwent, having never been there before and had a red-letter-day to rival all!

R.Mole 12.10

R.Derwent 13.13

PB Chub 7.04!!! EPIC.

 Trips 12 / Blanks 8 / 51.5hrs / 4 Barbel / 2 Doubles.

 September:

This was yet another lean month for me and considering its possibly the best month of the season to target Barbel I simply couldn't get away from work and family matters, which in the grand scheme of things is more important, said no angler, ever! When I did get out I had some successes on the river Lea and Nene, but most notably was my incredible capture of a R.Ivel Barbel and a double at that. A river touted by many as a river in serious decline over the last decade through varying factors, it only took me 11 hours in total to manage the feat...child's play this Barbel lark :). Plus I also managed a big Kentish Stour Chub of 6.01 whilst rolling meat for Barbel, quite a turn up as that's a huge fish for the river.

A big girl for the KS!

R.Nene 8.07 (not a double but a great start)

R.Ivel 10.14 (A fish I thought would take me years to catch)

 6 Trips / 3 Blanks / 35.5hrs / 6 Barbel / 1 Double.

 October:

A few trips were made through October and I had high hopes for a couple of the trips, however things were starting to go against me as I found conditions weren't in my favour and was missing the good conditions to be on the bank, I was quickly finding out that learning new rivers in the cooler months was hard going as I found it difficult to locate and stalk fish/potential areas. This will be a recurring theme I'm sure and ended the month Barbel-less, in fact the only fish I did catch were off of a R.Test tributary in the shape of some beautiful Grayling to just over 2lbs.

The best of a dozen taken on the float.

 6 Trips / 6 Blanks / 37.5hrs / 0 Barbel / 0 Doubles.

 November:

My Barbel fishing by this point had taken bit of a nosedive and given the cold crisp conditions I sought out other species to target and although I did try on the odd occasions for Barbel it was the Grayling fishing that proved most fruitful. Two trips to the splendid R.Wylye in Wiltshire provided some of, if not the best Grayling fishing I've had the pleasure of experiencing. Numerous two-pound plus specimens were caught whilst trotting with the best in November weighing 2lb 7oz. I did also manage a stonker of a R.Colnbrook Chub too weighing a massive 6lb 6oz which was taken whilst in search of the elusive Barbel that do call this river home, not that I can catch them!

R.Wylye 2lb 7oz.

R.Colnbrook breezeblock, 6.06

 4 Trips / 4 Blanks / 29hrs / 0 Barbel / 0 Doubles.

 December:

Just two Barbel trips were embarked upon in the last month of the year and given how poor my previous couple of months were for the species I didn't hold out much hope, but what do you know! A mild spell just before new year produced a super looking R.Lea powerhouse which bought an end to my mini drought, but also my time on the river which to be fair had been tough, well earned and one of the hard ones taken care of. Also as the weather got colder I fancied a go for some river pike and was rewarded with a superb mornings sport, two Pike were landed but both well worth catching with the best just missing out on twenty pounds.

R.Lea 10.05

19lb 9oz river Pike in the winter morning sun.

 2 Trips / 1 Blank / 17hrs / 1 Barbel / 1 double.

 January:

A month of almost seemingly endless frosty mornings, could only mean one thing, Grayling! A return to the R.Wylye produced my best ever days sport for the species and taking no less than 7x 2lb+ fish to 2lb 9oz, quite a day it was. The Itchen was also on my radar and although the Grayling didn't show for me in numbers the Roach put in a surprise appearance and managed a few to just under 2lbs.

R.Wylye 2.09 - (2nd best ever)

R.Itchen 1.14

 0 Trips / 0 hrs / 0 Barbel / 0 Doubles.

 February:

A couple of trips out for Barbel were had, one on the R.Severn and one on the Colnbrook as I hoped with the slight increase in river temps would begin to stir the Barbel into feeding. That didn't happen. All I can remember was an expensive night trying to get out of a field....

 2 Trips / 11.5 hrs / 0 Barbel / 0 Doubles.

 March:

At the turn of the year I had my sights firmly set on having a 7-10 day assault on the rivers towards the back end of the season to try and find myself another river double to boost my tally even further, and it could not have started any better as I joined friend and fellow blogger George for a morning (wasn't planned this way) on the Warks Avon to target a Barbel, I left the river at 1pm having not only bagged a monster Chub for the river, but also a big Barbel too. The blanks that had mounted up were all but forgotten, it was a brilliant mornings fishing and to share it with George was wonderful!

I then went on to fish the R.Severn, R.Bourne, R.Dorset Stour, R.Itchen all with the view to maybe adding one last fish to that now very impressive list, much to my dismay however I drew almost a complete blank on all of those barring a few modest Chub. It wasn't until the penultimate evening on the R.Wey that I got a chance to wrap up the season with a bang, that said the Barbel I hooked had no inclination to stick around and after a brief battle a large unseen fish smashed me up in a nearside tree, thankfully for me whilst still cursing my rotten luck and thinking of drowning my sorrows did my rod hoop over again to produce another double figure Barbel, I got that grandstand finish I had dreamt of. It was not the way I planned it, but when does it ever go to plan aye? What an end! Eight different rivers chalked off my list in just this season alone, which now brings me up to 13 rivers out of my overall target of 40. Can I reach 20 and the half way point by the end of next season? That will be my target.

R.Warks Avon 12.06

R.Warks Avon 6.03

R.Wey 10.04

 9 Trips / 75.5hrs / 2 Barbel / 2 Doubles.

It's Been a Tough Spring.

I can almost count the amount of fish caught this closed season on two hands its been that tough, I hoped with more stable and favourable Tench weather that I'd really get amongst them in the numbers that I'm used to.

To begin with things were slow going and considering the bottom was being ripped up in sections of the lake I was expecting action fairly quickly, unfortunately this didn't happen right away and had to wait a good a hour or two before the first Tinca slipped up. A good solid fight as usual ensued, with most of it under the rod tip I was always within touching distance. Once its resolve was broken I slipped a lovely mint conditioned Tench into the net. A pleasing 6lb 3oz on the scales and what I hoped to be the beginning of a catching spell.

Also when netting that Tench a Smooth/Common Newt was in the folds of my net, rolled up in the clay!

But, much befitting for the last 3 months of fishing I only got the odd knock and a couple of missed bites on the float, man this has been tough going. So around 11am I decided to give it a break and head off to do some walking in the forest to get some exercise. With the camera in hand I also got some great shots (improvements on last years attempts.

Male Adonis Blue

Female Adonis Blue

After a 4 hour rest I got back to the Tench fishing and annoyingly I could see numerous fish moving around in the upper layers of the water column and wasn't until later on in the day and observing was glaringly obvious that the Tench were beginning to group and no doubt spawning was firmly on their minds in the coming days. So for me the Tench fishing is over before it had barely begun!

I AM FIRMLY LOOKING FORWARD TO THE RIVERS OPENING UP!

It has been diabolical and thats putting it mildly, lets hope that fortunes improve and I can get off to flying start on the double figure Barbel challenge where I begin the season on 5 rivers.

Thames, Wandle, Sussex Ouse, Hampshire Avon and Trent currently ticked off my list, if I can get up to 10+ by the end of this season I will be ecstatic to say the least. Fingers and toes crossed.

Slim Pickings, Happy New Year All!

I've barely fished since my last blog post, work and family reign supreme, that said I have been out twice, both in search of Roach, ...
